Infants and small children
are NOT recommended to wear gas masks and
should use
PAPRs or Powered Air Purifying Respirators. This is because children’s
lungs are still underdeveloped and have difficulty using a negative pressure
mask, meaning that you have to breath in to draw the air through the
canister. A PAPR is a positive pressure device
that continually blows air into a hood making it very easy to breath. It
consists of a pump motor, filter or canister and hood that cover the head or
entire body in the case of an infant.
Age guidelines for gas
masks are unclear but chem./bio canisters are harder to breath through than
normal particulate filters so even a healthy adult depending on their size
may find using a gas mask difficult.
Performance of Response Escape Hood Canister Against Various
Chemical Agents
REHCC’s Response Escape Hood Canister has been tested to determine how
effectively it can protect an individual against a variety of chemical
agents. This canister contains a pleated high-efficiency (P-100) filter to
remove aerosols, radionuclides, and solid particulates; and an impregnated
activated carbon bed to adsorb (filter out) gases and vapors. Tear gas
agents are removed from the inspired airstream by the P-100 filter and the
impregnated carbon bed. Mustard (HD), Sarin (GB), DMMP (a Sarin simulant),
HCN, and CK are also effectively adsorbed by the carbon bed.
